Many things I thought were mine
Must be returned down the line.
There are few things which remain
That one can own, and thus retain.
The rest are borrowed – just on loan,
Things we really never own…
Like the things that others give,
Clothes we wear, or where we live.
All the things that I can see
Are not truly owned by me.
All these things shall pass away.
They are borrowed until that day.
We cannot keep borrowed things…
Fortune, gold, and diamond rings;
Even friends, or another’s love.
Life’s on loan from God above.
All those things must surely go,
Even lovers that we know.
Only these will not depart –
Faith, hope, and love in our heart.
These things ONLY, do I own,
Things that some have never known.
With faith in God, hope does start
Then love can live in my heart.
Borrowed things I’ll leave, you see.
Only these, I’ll take with me-
Faith and hope in God above.
But the greatest one is …Love.
