An old man walked along his way
across the hills and fields of hay.
His walk was slow, with steps unsure,
as if he struggled to endure.
As he approached me I could see
he was talking, but not to me.

“Lord, how fast my life is waning!
Mind You, now, I’m not complaining;
I just thought I’d be here longer,
and I hoped I would be stronger.
It seems to me that I’m failing
and something is always ailing.”

“I’ve got my kids and my good wife,
so I would never change my life.
I’d like to live another day,
there are so many things to say.
I want to tell my kids and wife
what blessings they’ve been in my life.”

“When time together seems too brief
and death creeps in like a thief,
it’s hard, you know, to say good-bye
and see our loved ones start to cry.
I’d like to stay to see them through,
But You know best, Lord, what to do.”

“If I don’t make it through the night,
then I’ll be waiting in the light
until they wade to Jordan’s shore
to live in light for evermore.”
I heard his words and now I see,
that old man walking there… is me.
